KBMK 2023: Two BSO KSPM FEB Unud Teams, Trivest Capital Successfully Passed to the Semifinal Stage, and Selari Capital Achieved National Best IV in the Field of Investment Research

Denpasar, Press Bureau of BEM FEB Unud: Students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University (FEB Unud), consisting of two teams, namely Trivest Capital, which made it through to the semifinal stage, and Selari Capital, which won the National Best IV in the field of investment research at the National Student Competition for Business, Management, and Finance (KBMK), which is one of the prestigious national-level events held by the National Achievement Centre of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Puspresnas Kemendikbudristek). The semifinal and final stages of KBMK 2023 were held offline at IPMI International Business School Jakarta for three consecutive days from August 7–11, 2023. Trivest Capital consists of three team members, namely Kadek Yoga Dwiantara, Dorojatun Malik, and Kadek Dwi Wahyudiana Putra as the team leader, all of whom are from the Bachelor of Management Study Programme. Meanwhile, Selari Capital, which also has three members, consists of Ni Putu Suriani as team leader, Anak Agung Ngurah Laksamana Sadewa from the Bachelor of Accounting Study Programme, and Elaine Tairio from the Bachelor of Management Study Programme. Both teams are functionaries of the Semi-Autonomous Body of the Capital Market Study Group (BSO KSPM), which has previously provided them with a platform to further explore the field of investment research.

KBMK is a competition that evaluates the academic ability and reasoning of students in the field of science, as well as an effort to bring closer the partnership between academics, business, and government, which this year carries the theme "Manifestation of the ESG Concept in Supporting Indonesia's Chairmanship in ASEAN in 2023" for the development of the blue economy and strengthening maritime development in the Indo-Pacific region within the framework of the fields of business, management, and finance. KBMK consists of five fields, but the team from Udayana University only sent two teams to compete in the business planning field, two teams for the investment research field, and one team for the investigative audit finance field. The Trivest Capital and Selari Capital teams compactly expressed their reasons for participating in the competition because KBMK is the most prestigious event at the national level, organized directly by the Ministry of Education and Culture, as well as wanting to explore the field of investment research. In addition, they also revealed that BSO KSPM had provided an activity called "Internal Education," which focused on the development and readiness of functionaries among its members to explore the field of investment research relevant to this competition so as to increase their confidence to take part in the competition.

Competing with 92 teams from all universities in Indonesia, it was not an easy journey for them to make it to the semifinal and final stages. In the preliminary round, they were given the task of compiling an investment research report with a theme that focuses on the blue economy of the company PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk (SMDR) with a competitor analysis scale in the national region. Trivest Capital felt that this was the best investment research they had ever done, and sure enough, when the Top 10 was announced to advance to the semifinals, Trivest Capital was ranked second after UGM, as well as Selari Capital, which made it through to the semifinals. Before they went to Jakarta for the semifinals, they were instructed to analyze the new company, PT Wintermar Offshore Marine Tbk (WINS), to make a paper and PowerPoint presentation. Both teams had tried their best to not sleep all day to analyze the company, but Trivest Capital did not make it to the Top 5 (Final Round). However, this did not make Trivest Capital down and discouraged because its partner Selari Capital managed to qualify for the final round. Putu Agus Ardiana, SE, MM, M.Acc.Fin, Ph.D., Ak., as the supervisor in this competition, directed them to fully support each other as teammates in order to continue to advance to the final round until they succeeded in bringing the champion and the name of Udayana University.

The various obstacles they faced with the long process they had to go through were also expressed by the two teams, who felt the same way. "One of our main obstacles during the competition was the incomplete access to data (especially in the semifinals and grandfinal rounds, due to the wider scope of analysis at the Asia-Pacific and global levels). This is because the average source of complete and accurate financial information is paid with a large subscription fee," they said during the online interview. However, to overcome this, they try to do a more in-depth analysis by spending more time doing research to get more mature and accurate results, and they try to contact colleagues who have access to data. The role of the supervising lecturer for them is important because it has provided direction and input on the results of the research they have done. "Here we get a lot of input and new knowledge from our supervisors, both in terms of research results, writing, and presentation techniques. So we are very helpful and very grateful to our supervisors," said both teams.

The final stage of competing with teams from the renowned and best universities in Indonesia, namely Bravest Capital (Brawijaya University), Prianca Capital (Gadjah Mada University), Nauti Capital (Gadjah Mada University), and Royal Capital (University of Indonesia), made them even more challenged to be able to fight as much as possible in order to compete with other great teams. In the grand final round, they were only given 10 minutes for presentation (5 minutes less than the semifinal round) and 15 minutes for a question and answer session. It was only after 25 tense minutes that they could sigh with relief while singing John Lennon's "War is Over". Then, Selari Capital also explained that for the closing and announcement, Puspresnas BPTI and IPMI held a cultural parade by wearing traditional clothes from each region. The three of us were given the opportunity to walk on stage like models while wearing Balinese traditional clothing as the pride of the Balinese people. They did not expect that during the awarding, the Udayana University The Selari Capital team was announced as the Best National Champion IV KBMK 2023 in the field of investment research and won Best Costume at the Cultural Parade. In addition, Selari Capital also shared their exciting story of facing the final round. "In the final round, we were only given 8 hours to complete our analyses and presentations, so we didn't sleep with the supervisors and friends in the hotel room until 5 a.m., plus the drama of a blackout due to a short circuit in the hotel room, which had hampered our work at that time," they said.

This KBMK event is one of the platforms for both teams to hone their skills and capacity in the field of capital markets and investment. There are many benefits and extraordinary insights they get from the competition. The Selari Capital team revealed that "the competition is an extraordinary opportunity to develop ourselves, and don't be afraid to face challenges because every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. Seize every opportunity, adapt quickly, embrace collaboration, and persevere through challenges, because in the crucible of competition is invaluable learning about resilience, innovation, and growth. Competing is not about winning but about enjoying the learning process. Your struggle here has just begun; immediately prepare yourself to be the best so that you can make the Faculty of Orange and our beloved Udayana University proud. Keep up the spirit, and hopefully we can meet later in the Udayana University Contingent Team KBMK 2024!", they said. In line with the Selari Capital Team, the Trivest Capital Team also hopes that students who are participating in the competition can be enthusiastic, not despair, continue to try to learn from mistakes, and remember to continue to develop into better individuals in the future.
